Jump Starting a Pontiac Solstice

If your Pontiac Solstice will not start First do Simple checks Before JUMP Starting making these checks, make sure you have followed the correct starting procedure and that you have sufficient fuel. If your Pontiac Solstice  is equipped with the engine immobiliser system, also check whether the other keys will start the engine. If they work, your key may be broken. Have the key checked at your Toyota dealer. If none of your keys work, the system is possibly broken. Call your Pontiac Solstice dealer. If the Pontiac Solstice engine is not turning over or is turning over too slowly Check that the Pontiac Solstice  battery terminals are tight and clean. If the battery terminals are O.K., switch on the interior light. If the Pontiac Solstice light is out, dim or goes out when the Pontiac Solstice starter is cranked, the battery is discharged. You may try jump starting.   If the light is O.K., but the engine still will not start, it needs adjustment or repair. Call a Pontiac Solstice  dealer or qualified Pontiac Solstice repair shop. Do not pull-or push-start the Pontiac Solstice. It may damage the vehicle or cause a collision when the engine starts. Also the three-way catalytic converter may overheat and become a fire hazard.
If the Pontiac Solstice engine turns over at its normal speed but will not start— Check that all the push-on connectors are tight. (For example, connectors at the Pontiac Solstice spark plugs, ignition coil and/or distributor) If the connectors are O.K., the Pontiac Solstice engine may be flooded because of repeated cranking.  Starting a flooded engine” for further instructions.  Starting a flooded Pontiac Solstice engine If the engine will not start, your engine may be flooded because of repeated cranking. If this happens, turn the Pontiac Solstice key to “START” with the accelerator pedal held down. Keep the key and accelerator pedal so for 15 seconds and release them. Then try starting the engine with your foot off the accelerator pedal. If the Pontiac Solstice engine does not start after 15 seconds of cranking, release the key, wait a few minutes and try again. If the engine still will not start, it needs adjustment or repair. Call a Toyota dealer or qualified repair shop for assistance. Do not crank for more than 30 seconds at a time. WARNING - Battery Never attempt to check the electrolyte level of he battery as this cause the battery to rupture or explode causing serious injury. Jump starting procedure1. Make sure the Pontiac Solstice booster battery is 12-volt and that its negative terminal is grounded. 2. If the booster battery is in another Pontiac Solstice, do not allow the Pontiac Solstice's to touch.3. Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads.

4. Connect the Pontiac Solstice jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the previous illustration. First connect one end of a jumper cable to the positive terminal of the discharged Pontiac Solstice battery (1), then connect the other end to the positive terminal on the booster battery (2). Proceed to connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery (3), then the other end to a solid, stationary, metallic point (for example, the Pontiac Solstice engine lifting bracket)away from the battery (4). Do not connect it to or near any part that moves when the Pontiac Solstice engine is cranked. CAUTION - Battery cables Do not connect the jumper cable from the negative terminal of the booster battery to the negative terminal of the discharged battery. This can cause the discharged battery to overheat and crack, releasing battery acid. Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything except the correct battery terminals or the correct ground. Do not lean over the Pontiac Solstice battery when making connections. Start the engine of the Pontiac Solstice with the booster battery and let it run at 2,000rpm, then start the engine of the Pontiac Solstice with the discharged battery. the cause of your battery discharging is not apparent, you should have your Pontiac Solstice checked by an Authorized Pontiac Solstice Dealer .Push-starting Pontiac Solstice's equipped with automatic transaxle cannot be push-started. jump-starting. For proper Pontiac Solstice maintenance, safety, and maximum fuel economy, you must always maintain recommended tire inflation pressures and stay within the load limits and weight distribution recommended for your Pontiac Solstice. Recommended cold tire inflation pressures All Pontiac Solstice tire pressures (including the spare) should be checked every day when the tires are cold. “Cold Tires” means the Pontiac Solstice has not been driven for at least three hours or driven less than 1.6 km (one mile). To equalize tread wear, it is recommended that the tires be rotated every 12,000 km (7,500 miles) or sooner if irregular wear develops. During rotation, check the tires for correct balance. The compact spare tire is not designed to be mounted on a regular size wheel, and the Pontiac Solstice compact spare tire wheel is not designed for mounting a regular size tire. Pontiac Solstice Wheel replacement When replacing the Pontiac Solstice metal wheels for any reason, make sure the new wheels are equivalent to the original Pontiac Solstice factory units in diameter, rim width and offset. WARNING A wheel that is not the correct size may adversely affect Pontiac Solstice wheel and bearing life, braking and stopping abilities, handling characteristics, ground clearance, body-to-tire clearance, snow chain clearance, speedometer calibration, headlight aim and bumper height. Wheel alignment and tire balance The wheels on your Pontiac Solstice were aligned and balanced carefully at the factory to give you the longest tire life and best overall performance. In most cases, you will not need to have your Pontiac Solstice wheels aligned again. However, if you notice unusual tire wear or your Pontiac Solstice pulling one way or the other, the alignment may need to be reset. If you notice your Pontiac Solstice vibrating when driving on a smooth road, your wheels may need to be rebalanced. CAUTION Improper wheel weights can damage your Pontiac Solstice's aluminum wheels. The TIN can be used to identify the tire in case of a recall. 1. Manufacturer or brand name Manufacturer or Brand name is shown. A tire’s sidewall is marked with a tire size designation. You will need this information when selecting replacement tires for your car. The following explains what the letters and numbers in the tire size designation mean. Example tire size designation: (These numbers are provided as an example only; your tire size designator could vary depending on your Pontiac Solstice.) P185/65R14 86H P - Applicable Pontiac Solstice type (tires marked with the prefix “P’’ are intended for use on passenger cars or light trucks; however, not all tires have this marking). 185 - Tire width in millimeters. 65 - Aspect ratio. The tire’s section height as a percentage of its width. Checking tire life (TIN : Tire Identification Number) Any tires that are over 6 years, based on the manufacturing date, tire strength and performance, decline with age naturally (even unused spare tires). Therefore, the tires (including the spare tire) should be replaced by new ones. You can find the manufacturing date on the tire sidewall (possibly on the inside of the wheel), displaying the DOT Code. The DOT Code is a series of numbers on a tire consisting of numbers and English letters. The manufacturing date is designated by the last four digits (characters) of the DOT code. DOT : XXXX XXXX OOOO The front part of the DOT means a plant code number, tire size and tread pattern and the last four numbers indicate week and year manufactured. For example: DOT XXXX XXXX 1611 represents that the tire was produced in the 16th week of 2011. WARNING - Tire age Tires degrade over time, even when they are not being used. Regardless of the remaining tread, it is recommended that tires generally be replaced after six (6) years of normal service. Heat caused by hot climates or frequent high loading conditions can accelerate the aging process. Failure to follow this warning can result in sudden tire failure, which could lead to a loss of control and an accident involving serious injury or death. 4. Tire ply composition and material The number of layers or plies of rubber- coated fabric in the tire. Tire manufacturers also must indicate the materials in the tire, which include steel, nylon, polyester, and others. The letter "R" means radial ply construction; the letter "D" means diagonal or bias ply construction; and the letter "B" means belted-bias ply construction. 5. Maximum permissible inflation pressure This number is the greatest amount of air pressure that should be put in the tire. Do not exceed the maximum permissible inflation pressure. Refer to the Tire and Loading Information label for recommended inflation pressure. 6. Pontiac Solstice Maximum load rating This number indicates the maximum load in kilograms and pounds that can be carried by the tire. When replacing the tires on the Pontiac Solstice, always use a tire that has the same load rating as the factory installed tire. 7. Uniform tire quality grading Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tire sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width. For example: TREADWEAR 200 TRACTION AA TEMPERATURE A Tread wear The tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. Traction - AA, A, B & C The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, B and C. Excessive speed, under inflation, or excessive loading, either separately or in combination, can cause heat build-up and possible sudden tire failure. If the overheat warning is displayed with no sign of steam:
Turn the air conditioning off.

In heavy traffic, let the Pontiac Solstice engine idle in N (Neutral)
while stopped. If it is safe to do so, pull off the road, shift to P (Park) or N (Neutral) and let the Pontiac Solstice engine idle.

ignition switch is in the ON position. An electric Pontiac Solstice engine cooling fan under the hood can start up even when the Pontiac Solstice engine is not running and can cause injury. Keep hands, clothing, and tools
away from any underhood electric fan. You or others can be badly burned by hot coolant or steam from your radiator. If you see or hear steam coming from under the hood, don’t open the
hood until the radiator has had time to cool. Never try to open a cooling system pressure cap when the Pontiac Solstice radiator is hot.

Adding only plain water to the cooling system can be dangerous. Plain water, or some other liquid such as alcohol, can boil before the proper coolant mixture will. The Pontiac Solstice’s coolant warning system
is set for the proper coolant mixture. With plain water or the wrong mixture, the Pontiac Solstice engine could get too hot but you would not get the overheat warning. The Pontiac Solstice engine could catch fire and you or
others could be burned. Check Pontiac Solstice engine coolant (antifreeze) protection every 12 months (before the onset of freezing weather, where applicable). If coolant is dirty or rusty in appearance, the system should be drained, flushed, and refilled with fresh coolant. Check the front of the A/C condenser for any accumulation of bugs, leaves, etc. If dirty, clean by gently spraying water from a garden hose vertically down the face of the condenser. Check the coolant recovery bottle tubing for brittle rubber,
cracking, tears, cuts, and tightness of the connection at the bottle and radiator. Inspect the entire system for leaks. With the Pontiac Solstice engine at normal operating temperature (but not running), check the cooling system pressure cap for proper vacuum sealing by draining a small amount of
coolant from the radiator drain cock. If the cap is sealing properly, the Pontiac Solstice engine coolant (antifreeze) will begin todrain from the coolant recovery bottle. DO NOT REMOVE
THE Pontiac Solstice COOLANT PRESSURE CAP WHEN THE COOLING SYSTEM IS HOT.

Use only high purity water such as distilled or deionized water when mixing the water/Pontiac Solstice engine coolant solution. The use of lower quality water will reduce the amount of corrosion protection in the Pontiac Solstice engine
cooling system.
it is the owner’s responsibility to maintain the proper level of protection against freezing according
to the temperatures occurring in the area where the Pontiac Solstice is operated. Mixing coolant types will decrease the life of the Pontiac Solstice engine coolant and will require more frequent coolant changes.
Pontiac Solstice Cooling System Pressure Cap The cap must be fully tightened to prevent loss of coolant and to ensure that coolant will return to the radiator from the coolant recovery bottle.

The cap should be inspected and cleaned if there is any accumulation of foreign material on the sealing surfaces.

Never add coolant when the Pontiac Solstice engine is overheated. Do not loosen or remove the cap to
cool an overheated Pontiac Solstice engine. Heat causes pressure to build up in the cooling system. To prevent scalding
or injury, do not remove the pressure cap while the system is hot or under pressure. Do not use a pressure cap other than the one

Disposal of Used Coolant

Coolant Level
The coolant bottle provides a quick visual method for determining that the coolant level is adequate. With the

added, contents of coolant recovery bottle must also be protected against freezing. If frequent coolant additions are required, or if the level in the coolant recovery bottle does not drop when
the Pontiac Solstice engine cools, the cooling system should be pressure tested for leaks. Maintain coolant concentration at 50% Pontiac Solstice engine coolant (minimum) and distilled water for proper
corrosion protection of your Pontiac Solstice engine, which contains aluminum components.

Make sure that the radiator and coolant recovery bottle overflow hoses are not kinked or obstructed. Keep the front of the radiator clean. If your Pontiac Solstice is equipped with air conditioning, keep the front of the
condenser clean, also. Do not change the Pontiac Solstice thermostat for Summer or Winter operation. If replacement is ever necessary, install ONLY the correct type Pontiac Solstice thermostat. Other designs may

Automatic Transmission
The shift lever must be in the NEUTRAL or PARK
position before you can start the Pontiac Solstice engine. Apply the brakes
before shifting into any driving gear.
If the Pontiac Solstice engine fails to start after you have followed the
“Normal Starting” or “Extreme Cold Weather” procedures,
it may be flooded. To clear any excess fuel, push
the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold it.

or -18°C), it could be flooded with too much gasoline. Push the

Key to briefly turn the ignition switch to the START

starter motor will continue to run, and it will disengage
automatically when the Pontiac Solstice engine is running. If the Pontiac Solstice engine
fails to start, the starter will disengage automatically in 10
seconds. If this occurs, turn the ignition switch to the
LOCK position, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then repeat the
normal starting procedure.

Never pour fuel or other flammable liquids into
the throttle body air inlet opening in an attempt
to start the Pontiac Solstice. This could result in a flash
fire causing serious personal injury.
Do not attempt to push or tow your Pontiac Solstice to
get it started. Pontiac Solstices equipped with an automatic
transmission cannot be started this way.
Unburned fuel could enter the catalytic converter
and once the Pontiac Solstice engine has started, ignite
and damage the converter and Pontiac Solstice. If the
Pontiac Solstice has a discharged battery, booster cables
may be used to obtain a start from a booster
battery or the battery in another Pontiac Solstice. This
type of start can be dangerous if done improperly.

When Should an Airbag Inflate in my Pontiac Solstice?

Frontal airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal
or near-frontal crashes to help reduce the potential for severe
injuries mainly to the driver’s or right front passenger’s head and chest.
However, they are only designed to inflate if the impact exceeds a
predetermined deployment threshold. Deployment thresholds
are used to predict how severe a crash is likely to be in time for the
airbags to inflate and help restrain the Pontiac Solstice occupants.
Whether the frontal airbags will or should deploy is not based on
how fast your Pontiac Solstice is traveling. It depends largely on what you hit,
the direction of the impact, and how quickly your Pontiac Solstice slows down.
Frontal airbags may inflate at different crash speeds. For example:
If the Pontiac Solstice hits a stationary object, the airbags could inflate at
a different crash speed than if the Pontiac Solstice hits a moving object.
If the Pontiac Solstice hits an object that deforms, the airbags could inflate
at a different crash speed than if the Pontiac Solstice hits an object that
does not deform. If the Pontiac Solstice hits a narrow object
(like a pole), the airbags could inflate at a different crash speed
than if the Pontiac Solstice hits a wide object (like a wall).
If the Pontiac Solstice goes into an object at an angle, the airbags could

Here are some important things to know about the airbag system:

You can be severely injured or
killed in a crash if you are not
wearing your safety belt — even
if you have airbags. Airbags are
designed to work with safety belts, but do not replace them.
Also, airbags are not designed to
deploy in every Pontiac Solstice crash. In some
crashes safety belts are your only
restraint. Wearing your safety belt during a
crash helps reduce your chance
of hitting things inside the Pontiac Solstice
or being ejected from it. Airbags
are “supplemental restraints” to
the safety belts. Everyone in your
Pontiac Solstice should wear a safety belt
properly — whether or not there is
an airbag for that person.

A frontal Pontiac Solstice collision that is not severe enough to need airbag protection will not activate the system. This
does not mean something is wrong with the airbag system.
If you do have a collision in your Pontiac Solstice which deploys the airbags, any or all of the following may occur:
The nylon airbag material may sometimes cause abrasions
and/or skin reddening to the driver and front
passenger as the airbags deploy and unfold. The
abrasions are similar to friction rope burns or those
you might get sliding along a carpet or gymnasium
floor. They are not caused by contact with chemicals.
They are not permanent and normally heal quickly.
However, if you haven’t healed significantly within a
few days, or if you have any blistering, see your doctor immediately.
As the airbags deflate you may see some smoke-like
particles. The particles are a normal by-product of the
process that generates the nontoxic gas used for airbag
inflation. These airborne particles may irritate the skin,
eyes, nose, or throat. If you have skin or eye irritation,
rinse the area with cool water. For nose or throat
irritation, move to fresh air. If the irritation continues,
see your doctor. If these particles settle on your
clothing, follow the garment manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning.
It is not advisable to drive your Pontiac Solstice after the
airbags have deployed. If you are involved in another
collision, the airbags will not be in place to protect you.

WARNING!
Modifications to any part of the airbag system could cause it to fail
when you need it. You could be injured if the airbag system is not
there to protect you. Do not modify the components or wiring,
including adding any kind of badges or stickers to the steering wheel
hub trim cover or the upper right side of the instrument panel. Do not
modify the front bumper or Pontiac Solstice body structure.
Do not attempt to modify any part of your advanced airbag system.
The airbag may inflate accidentally or may not function properly if
modifications are made. Take your Pontiac Solstice to an authorized dealer for
any advanced airbag system service. If your seat including your trim
cover and cushion needs to be serviced in any way (including removal
or loosening/tightening of seat attachment bolts), take the Pontiac Solstice to
your authorized dealer. Only manufacturer approved seat accessories
may be used. If it is necessary to modify an advanced airbag system
for persons with disabilities, contact your authorized Pontiac Solstice dealer.
Do not place or hang any items such as add-on video players on the
right front passenger seat back. The additional weight may cause the
Occupant Classification System to be unable to correctly classify the
right front occupant. This could allow the passenger frontal airbag to
inflate when it is not desired.
You need proper knee impact protection in a collision. Do not mount
or locate any aftermarket equipment on or behind the knee bolsters.
It is dangerous to try to repair any part of the airbag system yourself. Be
sure to tell anyone who works on your Pontiac Solstice that it has an airbag system.

Airbags inflate with great force,
faster than the blink of an eye. Anyone who is up against, or very
close to, any airbag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed.
Do not sit unnecessarily close to the airbag, as you would be if you
were sitting on the edge of your seat or leaning forward. Safety
belts help keep you in position before and during a crash. Always
wear your safety belt, even with airbags. The Pontiac Solstice driver should sit as far
back as possible while still maintaining control of the Pontiac Solstice.
Occupants should not lean on or sleep against the door or side
windows in seating positions with seat-mounted side impact airbags
and/or roof-rail airbags.
CAUTION
Children who are up against, or
very close to, any airbag when it
inflates can be seriously injured or
killed. Airbags plus lap-shoulder
belts offer protection for adults
and older children, but not for
young children and infants.
Neither the Pontiac Solstice’s safety belt
system nor its airbag system is
designed for them. Young children
and infants need the protection
that a child restraint system can
provide. Always secure children
properly in your Pontiac Solstice.
