Pontiac Solstice Towing and Pull Behind
Towing Your Pontiac Solstice
To avoid damage, the disabled Pontiac Solstice should be towed with all four
wheels off the ground. Consult your Pontiac Solstice Dealer/retailer or a professional
towing service if the disabled Pontiac Solstice must be towed.
The driver can lose control when pulling a trailer if the correct
equipment is not used or the Pontiac Solstice is not driven properly. For
example, if the trailer is too heavy, the brakes may not work well — or
even at all. The driver and passengers could be seriously
injured. The Pontiac Solstice may also be damaged; the resulting repairs
would not be covered by the Pontiac Solstice warranty. Pull a trailer only
if all the steps in this section have been followed. Ask your
Pontiac Solstice Dealer/retailer for advice and information about towing a trailer
with the Pontiac Solstice.
Your Pontiac Solstice can tow a trailer if it is equipped with the proper trailer
towing equipment. To identify the trailering capacity of your Pontiac Solstice,
Trailering is different than just driving your Pontiac Solstice by itself. Trailering means changes in
handling, acceleration, braking, durability and fuel economy.
Weight of the Trailer Tongue The tongue load (A) of any trailer is
an important weight to measure because it affects the total or gross
weight of your vehicle. The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) includes the curb weight of the vehicle, any
cargo you may carry in it, and the people who will be riding in the
vehicle. If you have a lot of options, equipment, passengers, or cargo
in your vehicle, it will reduce the tongue weight your vehicle can
carry, which will also reduce the trailer weight your vehicle can tow.
And if you tow a trailer, you must add the tongue load to the
GVW because your vehicle will be carrying that weight,If you are using a weight-carrying hitch, the trailer tongue (A) should weigh 10 to 15 percent of
the total loaded trailer weight (B). After you have loaded your trailer,
weigh the trailer and then the tongue, separately, to see if the weights are
proper. If they are not, you may be able to get them right simply by
moving some items around in the trailer.
Pulling your Pontiac Solstice
towing the Pontiac Solstice may cause damage because of reduced
ground clearance. Always put the Pontiac Solstice on a flatbed truck.
The Pontiac Solstice was neither designed nor intended to be towed with any of
its wheels on the ground. If the Pontiac Solstice must be towed
Pulling your Pontiac Solstice is allowed ONLY if the driveshaft is removed. Towing
with the rear wheels on the ground while the driveshaft is connected can
result in severe transmission damage.
Look OUT! If the driveshaft is removed, the Pontiac Solstice can roll even if the transmission is in PARK, which could
cause serious injury or death.
The parking brake must be firmly engaged and the wheels chocked
during driveshaft removal and installation. The parking brake must
remain engaged unless the Pontiac Solstice is securely and properly connected to
the tow Pontiac Solstice, or the driveshaft is completely reinstalled. See your
authorized Pontiac Solstice Dealer for proper driveshaft removal and reinstallation
procedures, including flange orientation/alignment, use of
thread-locking compound, proper bolt torque specifications, etc.
